Type 4 curl pattern guide
TYPE 4A
defined · S-coil
4a — Defined Coils
Tight S-shaped coils, about the width of a crochet needle. Defined pattern when wet, some shrinkage.
TYPE 4B
Z-pattern · fluffy
4b — Z-Pattern
Sharp Z-shaped bends, less defined curl. Fluffy and full. High shrinkage — up to 70% of actual length.
TYPE 4C
tightest · most shrinkage
4c — Tightest Coil
Tightest Z-pattern, little to no visible curl definition without styling. Shrinkage up to 75%+ of actual length.
Not sure which type you are?
Look at a single curl when your hair is freshly washed with no product. 4a will form a loose spiral on its own. 4b will bend in Z-shapes but not spiral. 4c will clump with other strands but won't form a defined pattern on its own. Many people have more than one type — choose the most dominant one, or select the mix option above.
The float test — how to find your porosity
Take a clean shed hair — no product on it — and drop it in a glass of room-temperature water. Wait 4 minutes and look where it sits.

Color treated, bleached, or heat-damaged hair is almost always high porosity. If your hair soaks up product instantly but always feels dry — that's high porosity too.
The thread test — how to find your strand thickness
Take a single shed hair and hold it next to a piece of regular sewing thread. Compare the width of the two.

Delicate, breaks easily. Needs lightweight products — avoid heavy butters and thick oils.

Average thickness. Most products work. Balance between lightweight and rich formulas.

Note — strand thickness is different from hair density (how much hair you have). You can have fine strands and a lot of them, or coarse strands and very few. Thickness refers to the individual strand only.
Your ZIP code tells me your climate and water hardness automatically — I use it to determine whether humidity, hard water buildup, or dry air are affecting your hair, and I adjust your product recommendations accordingly.
